What is Lingokids, and what age range is it actually built for?

Lingokids ("Lingokids: Games & Shows" in the app stores) is a play-based English-language and early-learning app from Monkimun Inc., built around games, animated shows, songs, and podcasts rather than a single school subject. It targets younger children, roughly ages 2 to 8: Common Sense Media's independent review recommends it from age 3 and up (Common Sense Media: Lingokids review), and Lingokids' own marketing describes the same band.

That age ceiling matters as much as anything else in this review. Lingokids isn't built to grow with a child into the tween years, and there's nothing in the library aimed at a 9-to-13-year-old. Once a kid ages out of the early-learning range, the app has little left to offer, no matter how good the subscription is.

How much does Lingokids Plus cost right now, and how did we check?

Lingokids splits into two tiers: Lingokids Basic, which is free, and Lingokids Plus, the paid subscription. We checked Plus pricing directly on the current Apple App Store listing on July 26, 2026, and cross-referenced it against Lingokids' own help center pages (Lingokids Plus: Pricing & Currency; App Store listing):

Unlike a subscription with one fixed price, the App Store listing itself currently shows more than one active price point for Lingokids Plus at the same time, both monthly options sitting around $15 and the annual options spread from about $72 to $90. Lingokids' help center explains why: the displayed price depends on which app store and region your account is in, plus whatever promotion is running. There isn't one "real" number to quote, only a live one, so treat every figure here, including this one, as something to reconfirm before you pay.

Both the monthly and annual plans include a 7-day free trial before the first charge, per Lingokids' own pricing page.

What does the Lingokids free tier actually include?

This is where Lingokids does something a lot of "free" kids' apps don't. Lingokids Basic is a real ongoing free tier, not a locked demo or a card-required trial. It gives a rotating feed of about 10 new activities a day, split across four feeds by age and learning level, refreshing every 24 hours, indefinitely, with no payment information required at all (Lingokids Basic: Free Version).

The tradeoff is real too. Basic caps you at one child profile, has no offline mode, and gives parents no progress reports. The full 4,000-plus activity library, offline playback, up to four child profiles, and any parent progress tracking are all behind Plus. Some App Store reviewers also note the daily cap frustrates younger kids who finish their 10 activities and then have to wait until the next day.

What is Lingokids genuinely good at?

Credit where it's due. Lingokids is ad-free where it counts: its privacy policy states plainly, "We do not display any advertising within our Services," and it doesn't use children's data for ad targeting. That's backed by an independent kidSAFE Seal Program certification, specifically a COPPA-certified seal Lingokids has held since 2017 (kidSAFE member listing). Paired with a real, no-card free tier, that's a stronger privacy and pricing posture than most colorful "free" kids' apps manage.

The content itself holds up too, and it's been around long enough to have a track record. The production quality is strong, especially the songs and animated shows. Common Sense Media sums the app up as a "Big mix of early learning activities; can get pricey," while also flagging that the sheer volume can leave a kid without much guidance on what to try next.

Who is Lingokids not worth it for?

A few situations where the subscription is less likely to earn its cost:

• Your child is near or past age 8. The content is built for the 2-to-8 range, and there's no tween-level material behind the paywall. A 9-to-13-year-old will find little new to do here regardless of price.
• Your child plays casually rather than daily. If 10 fresh activities a day is genuinely enough for how your kid uses the app, Lingokids Basic may cover you without ever needing Plus.
• You have more than one young child on one account. Basic is limited to a single child profile, so a family with two or three kids in the target age range will hit that wall fast if they aren't paying.
• Budget is the constraint. At roughly $15 a month or up to $90 a year, Plus is a real recurring line item. Common Sense Media's own review echoes this, warning the subscription "can get pricey" and noting user reports of "unexpected charges," so read the trial and cancellation terms before you start it. Cancel through your device's App Store or Google Play subscription settings, not inside the app itself.

What does Lingokids' own privacy policy say about your child's data and advertising?

This is the part worth reading closely, because "no ads" and "no tracking" aren't the same claim.

On advertising, Lingokids' policy is direct: "We do not display any advertising within our Services," and "We do not use cookies or similar technologies in the App for advertising purposes" (Lingokids Privacy Policy). It also states children's personal information is not shared, sold, rented, or transferred to third parties for marketing purposes.

But the same policy discloses that product-analytics software still runs during a child's play sessions. It names an app instance identifier and related device identifiers, "configured in limited-ad-data mode for child users," along with automatic collection of what content a child viewed or interacted with, session duration, and general IP-derived location. Lingokids frames this as separate from advertising, and nothing in the policy suggests it's used to target ads at a child. But it's a different posture from an app that runs no analytics on a child's screen at all, and it's worth knowing plainly rather than assuming "no ads" means "no data collected." How should you evaluate any subscription kids' app before you buy?

Whatever app you're weighing, not just this one, the American Academy of Pediatrics' "5 C's" framework is a useful starting checklist (HealthyChildren.org: Kids & Screen Time):

1. Child. Is the content actually matched to your child's age and current skills, not just the marketed range?
2. Content. Have you looked at what your kid actually plays inside it, not just the store description?
3. Calm. Does your child come off the app regulated, or does it leave them wound up?
4. Crowding out. Is the subscription replacing time your family would rather spend elsewhere?
5. Communication. Are you talking with your kid about what they're doing in the app?

Add two questions specific to a subscription app like Lingokids: what does the current pricing page say, with a date attached, and what does the privacy policy actually say about data collected during a child's session, not only whether ads appear on screen.
